# Connect your own tools

> Add a connection so your forecasts can look things up in your own tools and data.

Part of the Prolepsia docs: Share and connect.
Video: [Connect your own tools](https://prolepsia.com/docs/videos/connections.mp4), 1:26, with [captions](https://prolepsia.com/docs/videos/connections.vtt).
This guide as a web page: https://prolepsia.com/docs/connections

## Steps

1. Open the menu under your name, choose Settings, then Connections.
2. Under Your connections, choose Add connection.
3. Enter a name that says what the server holds, and the server's address. The address must start with https://.
4. Under Sign-in, choose No sign-in, API key or OAuth sign-in. For an API key, paste the key. For OAuth, sign in at the server's own page after you save.
5. Choose Add connection. Prolepsia tests the server and lists its tools.
6. Switch tools on or off, then choose Done. Tools that may change data start switched off.
7. On a question, the button next to the run mode shows how many connections the next forecast will use. To leave one out, open the button and switch it off. On a question you created, each change saves on the question at once, and Reset to the preset puts it back.
8. When the forecast finishes, check About this forecast to see which connections it used.

## Good to know

- A connection is a remote MCP server: a service that offers tools a forecast can call, such as a company wiki or a data service.
- Forecasts you start, scheduled forecasts, automatic reruns and decisions use your connections and your organization's. Chat about a forecast can use them too.
- Organization admins add organization connections, which every member's forecasts can call. A member can switch one off for their own forecasts with Use in my forecasts.
- Prolepsia stores a key encrypted and never shows it again.
- A connection that fails never stops a forecast. Prolepsia skips it and shows it as failed. After three forecasts in a row where it failed, Prolepsia emails its owner, or every organization admin for an organization connection.
- When people besides you can read a question, the start screen warns you that its forecasts may show what a connection returned.

## What the video says

A connection lets your forecasts look things up in your own tools, such as a company wiki or a data service. To add one, open the menu under your name, choose Settings, then Connections. Your connections are for the forecasts you start. Nobody else can see them. Choose Add connection. Give it a name that says what the server holds, because forecasts see this name. Then enter the server's address. Under Sign-in, choose how Prolepsia identifies itself: no sign-in, an API key, or an OAuth sign-in at the server's own page. A key is stored encrypted and never shown again. Choose Add connection. Prolepsia tests the server and lists its tools. Tools that may change data start switched off. You can switch any tool on or off, now or later from the connection's card. Choose Done. Organization admins add organization connections. Forecasts that any member starts can call them, and each member can switch one off for their own forecasts with Use in my forecasts. Forecasts use your connections with no extra step. On a question, the button next to the run mode shows how many connections the next forecast will use. Open it to switch a connection off for this question. Each change saves on the question, and its later forecasts, automatic reruns included, use the same choices. When a forecast finishes, About this forecast lists each connection and whether the forecast used it. A connection that fails never stops a forecast. Prolepsia skips it and shows it as failed.
