## Forecast

- Yes: 36%
- No: 64%

## How Prolepsia reasons

## TL;DR
The saved forecast is **35.9% Yes** and **64.1% No** for Republicans winning the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate election. James Talarico is the favorite because the polling lead is broad and Ken Paxton’s weakness extends to otherwise Republican voters. Treat a Republican victory as a substantial risk, with turnout and shared polling error the main routes to an upset.

## Context
The forecast is dated October 6, 2026. The certified nominees are Republican Ken Paxton, Democrat James Talarico, and Libertarian Ted Brown. Election Day is November 3, and in-person early voting runs October 19–30. The race is therefore still in the campaigning and turnout-preparation stage, without in-person early-voting returns to test the surveys against. ([Ballot certification](https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/forms/2026-ballot-cert.pdf); [election calendar](https://www.sos.texas.gov/about/newsreleases/2026/092826.shtml))

The question concerns the winning party nominee, including a replacement nominee if applicable. Under the supplied criteria, agreement among the Associated Press, Fox News, and NBC determines resolution, with official certification as the fallback. Texas ordinarily elects by plurality: a candidate needs more votes than each opponent, not an absolute majority. Brown’s presence does not by itself force a runoff if neither major-party candidate reaches a majority. ([Texas Election Code](https://tcss.legis.texas.gov/resources/EL/htm/EL.2.htm))

## Evidence
Texas’s Republican history is the starting point. Democrats last won a Texas U.S. Senate election in 1988 and a statewide general election in 1994. That history makes a Democratic polling lead something to examine closely. It does not make the current nominees or their measured support irrelevant. ([Texas Tribune](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/01/texas-senate-gop-outside-spending-ken-paxton-thune-trump-talarico/))

Recent polling errors show why neither party’s outcome is secure. The full recent final-poll comparison below uses rounded margins displayed in historical polling records. Positive error means Republicans did better than the polling average; negative error means Democrats did better.

| Election | Final-average fieldwork coverage | Republican polling margin | Displayed Republican result margin | Result minus polls |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|
| [2018 Senate](https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2018/texas/cruz-vs-orourke) | October 22–November 5, 2018 | +6.8 points | +2.6 points | −4.2 points |
| [2020 Senate](https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2020/texas/cornyn-vs-hegar) | October 20–31, 2020 | +6.5 points | +9.8 points | +3.3 points |
| [2024 Senate](https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/texas/cruz-vs-allred) | October 22–November 4, 2024 | +4.4 points | +8.5 points | +4.1 points |

The lesson is dispersion, not a permanent Republican bonus. The two recent presidential-year elections understated Republican strength. The 2018 midterm overstated it. These are only three election-level observations, and the historical pages are retrospective records rather than verified publication-time snapshots. Final polls also come later in the campaign than this forecast. They establish that consequential misses happen; they do not establish which direction the next miss takes.

The current evidence points toward Talarico. The principal university and media polling inventory spans August through September. The table includes both Emerson observations available in the inputs, so its change over time is visible rather than inferred from only the latest survey. Margins are Paxton minus Talarico, in percentage points. LV means likely voters; RV means registered voters. ([Texas Politics Project tracker](https://texaspolitics.utexas.edu/blog/texas-2026-u-s-senate-poll-tracker))

| Survey | Fieldwork, 2026 | Population | Paxton | Talarico | R−D margin |
|---|---|---|---:|---:|---:|
| UT/Texas Politics Project | August 5–13 | RV | 39% | 42% | −3 points |
| Emerson | August 9–10 | LV | 47% | 46% | +1 point |
| Univision/YouGov | August 27–September 4 | RV | 43% | 48% | −5 points |
| AARP/Fabrizio–Impact | August 30–September 1 | LV | 44% | 48% | −4 points |
| NBC/Mason-Dixon | September 8–10 | Population labeling disputed | 43% | 46% | −3 points |
| ReconMR | September 8–11 | LV | 43% | 49% | −6 points |
| Emerson/Nexstar | September 12–14 | LV | 46% | 47% | −1 point |
| Texas Southern University | September 15–19 | LV | 46% | 47% | −1 point |
| Marist | September 17–20 | RV | 44% | 50% | −6 points |
| NYT/Siena | September 21–30 | LV | 45% | 51% | −6 points |
| Fox/Beacon–Shaw | September 24–28 | LV | 49% | 51% | −2 points |

The inventory supports a lead across different organizations, not a single dramatic poll. Its breadth matters, but its variation matters too. Some substantial likely-voter surveys show only a narrow Talarico advantage. Others show a larger lead. The original [Siena release](https://sri.siena.edu/2026/10/03/nytimes-siena-poll-of-likely-voters-senate-races/) confirms 51%–45%, while [AARP’s report](https://data.ddhq.io/polls/2026/09/10/Fabrizio-Ward/Impact-Research/AARP-Texas-2026-08-30-2026-09-01) confirms 48%–44%. Those shares correct inconsistent tracker presentations. [Emerson’s September release](https://emersoncollegepolling.com/texas-2026-poll-talarico-and-paxton-in-dead-heat-abbott-maintains-edge/) shows a statistically inconclusive two-point shift toward the Democrat from August, not evidence of Republican momentum.

Republican-friendly counter-evidence exists. A Paxton internal survey reported a 48%–45% Republican lead, and a Republican-sponsored Stratus survey reported a 48%–48% tie. Selective release and incomplete original documentation limit their force, but they show that the published evidence is not unanimous. ([Internal-poll reporting](https://www.aol.com/articles/internal-polling-finds-paxton-topping-142918000.html); [Stratus reporting](https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2026/09/29/paxton-and-talarico-tied-at-48-percent-in-latest-poll-for-texas-senate-seat/amp))

Turnout is the strongest Republican counterweight. Fox interviewed 1,203 registered voters, including 881 modeled likely voters. Talarico led 53%–46% among registered voters but 51%–49% among likely voters. This is a comparison within one survey, which makes it more informative than comparing unrelated pollsters. It shows that a more selectively participating electorate helps Paxton. It does not represent future movement: the likely-voter result already includes that screening. ([Fox toplines](https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2026/10/fox_september-24-28-2026_texas_topline_october-1-release.pdf))

Paxton’s problem also appears candidate-specific. In the same Fox likely-voter sample, Abbott leads the governor’s race 52%–47%, while Paxton trails in the Senate race. Paxton’s personal ratings are 40% favorable and 58% unfavorable; Talarico’s are 52% favorable and 44% unfavorable. I read this as evidence that the state’s Republican electorate has not vanished. Some of it is rejecting this Republican nominee. These findings explain the Senate ballot results rather than providing a separate extra advantage for Talarico. ([Fox toplines](https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2026/10/fox_september-24-28-2026_texas_topline_october-1-release.pdf))

The distinction between indecision and rejection matters. TSU finds Republican respondents dividing 84% for Paxton, 7% for Talarico, 4% for Brown, and 5% undecided, while 99% of Democratic respondents support Talarico. Republican consolidation has room to happen, but voters choosing Talarico are not the same as undecided Republicans. Fox also finds 89% of Talarico supporters and 85% of Paxton supporters certain of their choice. That weakens the claim that the Democratic lead automatically dissolves as Election Day approaches. ([TSU report](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/67aa7aa3e284b002cd6a420e/t/6ab15cb39e4cc420b9ef07f5/1790008500236/TSUSept2026_TXStatewideRaces.pdf); [Fox toplines](https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2026/10/fox_september-24-28-2026_texas_topline_october-1-release.pdf))

Campaign resources provide a Republican recovery mechanism, but nominal dollars overstate the imbalance. Republicans spent $122 million on September advertising and reserved another $66 million for future airtime. Yet their 72% share of broadcast spending bought only 54% of gross-rating-point exposure. Much of September’s campaign was already running during the latest surveys. Paxton’s announced fundraising of more than $18 million and a $20 million campaign ad buy support continued activity, but the fundraising announcement had not yet been reconciled against the quarterly filing. ([September advertising report](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/01/texas-senate-gop-outside-spending-ken-paxton-thune-trump-talarico/); [fundraising report](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/05/ken-paxton-third-quarter-fundraising-texas-senate-race-2026/))

Other evidence supports the plausibility of the polling without deciding the race. Reuters/Ipsos reports a national Democratic congressional-ballot lead of 44%–37%, which fits a Democratic-favorable midterm environment but is not a Texas Senate measurement. Latino outreach reporting finds only $4.2 million of $188 million in Republican advertising purchases and reservations directed to Spanish-language advertising. That limits confidence in an assumed persuasion surge, but neither advertising language nor national sentiment translates mechanically into Texas votes. ([Reuters/Ipsos](https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/reutersipsos-october-survey); [Spanish-language advertising report](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/02/texas-republican-spanish-ads-spending-paxton-talarico-senate/))

## What's non-obvious
The easy Republican comeback story counts some advantages twice. The likely-voter polls already incorporate turnout screening. Surveys that include leaners already capture some Republican consolidation. Late-September interviews already overlap the September advertising blitz. These remain reasons for uncertainty, but they are not wholly untapped gains waiting to be added to Paxton’s position.

The same discipline applies to the Democratic case. Candidate ratings, crossover voting, and the national environment largely explain why Talarico leads; they are not independent confirmations that make polling error disappear. A local example makes crossover credible: the January 31 state-Senate District 9 runoff delivered 54,473 Democratic votes and 40,648 Republican votes, with precinct analysis finding movement in heavily Anglo as well as Hispanic areas. But one low-turnout district election is not a statewide general election. ([University of Houston analysis](https://www.uh.edu/hobby/murrayletter/letterfeb26.pdf))

## Uncertainties
The largest gap is the actual electorate. Likely-voter methods differ, and several organizations can share a mistaken assumption about participation or nonresponse. Additional independently documented October polling and validated turnout evidence would help distinguish a durable lead from a shared measurement error. The evidence examined does not establish a verified newer October-fielded survey.

The durability of Republican crossover is also unresolved. Subgroup estimates are noisier than statewide results, and stated certainty is not observed voting. Repeated surveys of the same voters would help separate movement back to Paxton from changes in sample composition. Brown’s support and differing ballot questions add another source of uncertainty about where marginal votes go.

Campaign comparisons remain incomplete. Reconciled finance filings, comparable field-contact totals, and consistent measures of advertising exposure would clarify remaining campaign capacity. Registration backlogs do not supply a partisan signal on their own: Dallas’s clearance of nearly 70,000 records included applications and updates, not necessarily that many additional voters, and their partisan composition was not verified. ([Registration reporting](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/05/texas-voter-registration-backlog-county-frustration/))

These gaps leave a real Republican route to victory without displacing the central conclusion. Talarico has the stronger current evidence. The saved forecast remains 35.9% Yes and 64.1% No.

## The question

Imported from Polymarket.
This yes/no question comes from a single Polymarket market.

### How it resolves

This market will resolve according to the winner of the 2026 midterm Texas U.S. Senate election, inclusive of any run-offs.

A candidate shall be considered to represent a party in the event that he or she is the nominee of the party in question. Candidates other than the Democratic or Republican nominee (e.g., Greens, Libertarian, independent) may be added at a later date.

Candidates who run as independents will not be encompassed by the “Democrat” or “Republican” options regardless of any affiliation they may have with the party.

The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party.

The resolution source for this market is the Associated Press, Fox News, and NBC. This market will resolve once all three sources call the race for the same candidate. If all three sources haven’t called the race in this state for the same candidate, this market will resolve based on the official certification.
