## Forecast

- Yes: 73%
- No: 27%

## How Prolepsia reasons

## TL;DR
The forecast is **72.8% Yes and 27.2% No** for Democrats to win Mississippi’s 2026 Senate race. Scott Colom is the favorite because unfinished counting includes heavily Democratic Hinds County. Treat the reported 43-vote lead as a near-tie and focus on the location, eligibility and composition of the remaining ballots.

## Context
As of November 4, the election has moved from campaigning to counting. The reported totals are Colom 462,821, Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith 462,778, and independent Ty Pinkins 19,935. That leaves Colom ahead by 43 votes out of 945,534 reported candidate votes, with the race still uncalled ([WLOX](https://www.wlox.com/2026/11/04/hyde-smith-colom-address-watch-parties-election-night-comes-close/)).

The question concerns the Democratic nominee, not candidates with other affiliations. Pinkins therefore does not count toward a Democratic victory. Under the market rules, resolution follows agreement among AP, Fox and NBC, or official certification if their calls do not agree. Mississippi’s Senate general election is a plurality contest: the candidate with the most votes wins without needing a majority ([official requirements chart](https://mcusercontent.com/c9f52743f930fd93605c3a79c/files/db0bf77c-d59d-01a2-a6e1-ff93c657cab2/Majority_Chart.pdf)).

## Evidence
Mississippi’s long Republican Senate record is the historical starting point. Local reporting identifies 1982 as the last Democratic Senate victory ([Mississippi Independent](https://msindy.org/p/colom-pulls-ahead-of-hyde-smith-by)). But that history has limited power once nearly a million actual votes show a near-tie. It describes the state’s prior political alignment. It does not tell us which ballots remain uncounted in this election.

The more useful historical comparison concerns counting speed. AP’s pre-election decision notes report that Mississippi did not reach 90% counted in 2024 until November 8. A delayed result is therefore not, by itself, a sign of an unusual outcome or an advantage for either party. The same notes explain that Mississippi has no automatic recount; recounts require a court order ([AP decision notes](https://apnews.com/article/bb0cc7b4df9c9d64fd27f0d33eb8a2a9)). No verified historical reference class establishes a precise win rate for candidates in this particular overnight position.

The reported count changed sharply during election night. The available sequence is:

| Reported observation | Colom | Hyde-Smith | Pinkins | Colom’s lead or deficit |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| November 3, approximately 23:30 CST | 437,443 | 453,075 | 19,406 | −15,632 |
| November 4, 00:05 CST | 462,779 | 462,751 | 19,934 | +28 |
| November 4, approximately 03:00 CST | 462,821 | 462,778 | 19,935 | +43 |

The election-night and later totals are reported by [WLOX](https://www.wlox.com/2026/11/04/hyde-smith-colom-address-watch-parties-election-night-comes-close/); the explicitly timed midnight snapshot appears in the [Mississippi Independent](https://msindy.org/p/colom-pulls-ahead-of-hyde-smith-by). WLOX’s 06:00 CST observation retained the same latest totals, and Fox’s November 4, 07:51 EST page also showed Colom at 462,821 and Hyde-Smith at 462,778 ([Fox results](https://www.foxnews.com/elections/2026/midterm-results/state/mississippi)). These changes reflect reporting order, not voters changing their minds.

The statewide margin supplies almost no cushion. WLOX reports 95.6% counted, which implies roughly 44,000 outstanding votes against the 945,534 reported total ([WLOX](https://www.wlox.com/2026/11/04/hyde-smith-colom-address-watch-parties-election-night-comes-close/)). Expected-vote denominators can change. This is a useful indication of scale, not a measured inventory. A small partisan imbalance in that remaining pool can overwhelm a 43-vote lead.

**The main Democratic advantage is Hinds, not the current statewide lead.** Reported Hinds returns show 61,793 votes for Colom and 14,702 for Hyde-Smith ([Mississippi Independent](https://msindy.org/p/colom-pulls-ahead-of-hyde-smith-by)). Local reporting says counting paused shortly after midnight, leaving a concrete reason to expect more votes from a strongly Democratic county ([Darkhorse Press](https://darkhorsepressnow.com/news/2026-11-04/mississippi-senate-race-too-close-to-call-jackson-voters-reject-tourism-tax/)).

The size of that remainder is less secure than its potential importance. County-level estimates put roughly 9,000 votes outstanding in Hinds and 6,000 in Republican-leaning Rankin ([NBC results](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-elections/mississippi-senate-results)). If those ballots matched their counties’ reported candidate margins, the conditional contributions would be approximately 5,471 net Democratic votes from Hinds and 1,536 net Republican votes from Rankin. These are extrapolations, not observed late-ballot results. Their value is to show why the location of outstanding votes matters more than the statewide tie.

Republicans also have unfinished territory. An early report described 29 of 82 counties as below 99% complete, including Hinds and Madison at 95%, and Tate, Tishomingo, Calhoun, Warren, Scott and Marion at 90% ([SuperTalk](https://supertalkms.goodbarber.app/home-1/i/322139/us-senate-race-between-hyde-smith-colom-too-close-call-early-wednesday-morning)). These completion labels are estimates, and later county figures differ. They establish mixed geography, not a uniform Democratic late-vote pool.

One apparent Republican reserve also proved less persuasive on closer inspection. An early Calhoun display showed only 772 votes, while a later display showed 4,587 and near-complete precinct reporting ([county results](https://votes.decisiondeskhq.com/races/2026-11-03/mississippi-us-senate-general-election)). An old display should not be treated as evidence of a large hidden backlog.

Affidavit ballots are the other major uncertainty. Colom’s campaign estimated 10,000–15,000 outstanding, while another account attributed a claim of at least 15,000 to his campaign manager. Hyde-Smith’s campaign said its internal figures favored her. Neither side supplied an independently verified statewide inventory with county allocations and acceptance rates ([Mississippi Today](https://mississippitoday.org/2026/11/03/mississippi-senate-election-is-too-close-to-call-tuesday-night/)).

There is also no established Democratic share for those ballots. Election-day reporting described machine problems in Lamar, Lincoln, Hinds and Jackson, with some voters directed toward affidavits. That is mixed geography, not a single Democratic stronghold ([Mississippi Free Press](https://www.mississippifreepress.org/mississippi-voters-report-delays-faulty-machines-and-closed-precincts/)). The official handbook requires eligibility review and permits rejection for registration, signature or precinct-related reasons ([County Election Handbook](https://sos.ms.gov/content/documents/elections/2026%20County%20Election%20Handbook.revised%2012-30-2025.pdf)). A filed affidavit is not automatically a valid Senate vote.

The administrative window remains open. Qualifying mail ballots postmarked by November 3 can arrive through November 10, and voters with qualifying ID-related affidavit issues have until November 10 to present identification ([Secretary of State](https://www.sos.ms.gov/news/election-day-reminders-2026-general-election)). County certified returns are due November 13 ([official calendar](https://www.sos.ms.gov/content/documents/elections/2026%20Elections%20Calendar.pdf)). These deadlines explain why the morning count is not final; they do not establish the partisan direction of additions.

## What's non-obvious
A near-tie does not require an evenly balanced forecast. The reported statewide margin measures ballots already counted. The forecast concerns the ballots that remain. A substantial unfinished batch in a heavily Democratic county can make Colom the favorite even when his current lead is negligible. Conversely, the number of outstanding ballots in Republican-leading counties is not enough to settle the question: their net Republican margins must be compared with the stronger Democratic margins available in places such as Hinds.

The other easily missed distinction is between precinct completion and ballot completion. Lauderdale reported all 37 precincts while explicitly excluding absentee and affidavit ballots ([local report](https://queencitynewsfeed.com/news/local/2026-11-03/lauderdale-county-reports-2026-election-totals-from-all-precincts-absentee-affidavit-ballots-not-included/)). **Nearly all precincts reporting does not mean nearly all ballots counted.** The reverse accounting error is to add campaign affidavit estimates on top of vendor remaining-vote estimates. Those categories may overlap. Neither a completion label nor an affidavit claim supplies a clean additional pool on its own.

## Uncertainties
The largest gap is a verified county-by-ballot-type inventory. Hinds matters most: how many ballots remain there, which categories they belong to, and whether their partisan composition resembles the reported vote. A smaller remainder or a more Republican late mix would weaken the central reason for favoring Colom. Official batch counts and accepted-ballot totals would close this gap.

Affidavit acceptance is a separate unknown. The campaign estimate does not establish how many ballots will qualify, where they were cast, or whether they are already included in expected-vote totals. The evidence does not support a precise Democratic share. A reconciled inventory showing filed, accepted, rejected and already-counted affidavits by county would be far more useful than another statewide campaign assertion.

Corrections and litigation can also matter at this margin. Democrats sought extra voting time in DeSoto after alleged late openings and ballot shortages, but no verified disposition or quantified vote effect is established here ([Mississippi Today](https://mississippitoday.org/2026/11/03/mississippi-senate-election-is-too-close-to-call-tuesday-night/)). That is an unresolved issue, not evidence of a large additional Democratic batch. Likewise, court-ordered recounts remain possible, but the absence of an automatic recount means closeness alone does not trigger one ([AP decision notes](https://apnews.com/article/bb0cc7b4df9c9d64fd27f0d33eb8a2a9)).

The forecast therefore favors Colom while retaining substantial room for a Republican win. Its decisive premise is a Democratic advantage in unfinished counting, especially Hinds. It does not assume that the 43-vote lead is safe, that all affidavit ballots favor Democrats, or that reported totals cannot be corrected.

## The question

Imported from Polymarket.
This yes/no question comes from a single Polymarket market.

### How it resolves

This market will resolve according to the winner of the 2026 midterm Mississippi U.S. Senate election, inclusive of any run-offs.

A candidate shall be considered to represent a party in the event that he or she is the nominee of the party in question. Candidates other than the Democratic or Republican nominee (e.g., Greens, Libertarian, independent) may be added at a later date.

Candidates who run as independents will not be encompassed by the “Democrat” or “Republican” options regardless of any affiliation they may have with the party.

The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party.

The resolution source for this market is the Associated Press, Fox News, and NBC. This market will resolve once all three sources call the race for the same candidate. If all three sources haven’t called the race in this state for the same candidate, this market will resolve based on the official certification.
