The report Prolepsia wrote with this forecast.

TL;DR

NVIDIA has a 56.7% probability of being the largest company in the world by market cap on December 31, 2026, and a 43.3% probability of not being largest. It is the most likely winner, but not a secure one: the contest is chiefly against Apple, whose market cap is close enough for normal relative share-price moves to change the ranking. NVIDIA’s strong AI demand supports its lead, while Apple’s momentum and the possibility of an earnings-expectations reset limit confidence.

Key evidence

  • NVIDIA’s October 20 market capitalization was roughly $5.2T, versus roughly $5.0T for Apple. Alphabet and Microsoft were materially farther behind, making this primarily a two-company race (current market-cap ranking). Apple needs only about 5.45% relative outperformance from that starting point to pass NVIDIA.
  • The historical comparison cuts both ways. NVIDIA led Apple by 14.25% on October 20, 2025 and remained ahead at the December 31 close. In October 2024, Apple led NVIDIA and also retained the lead through year-end. Those two examples support persistence, but neither establishes a robust base rate for a much narrower current lead.
  • NVIDIA’s operating backdrop remains exceptional. Its fiscal Q2 2027 release reported $96.221B in quarterly revenue, $89.0B in Data Center revenue, and a Q3 revenue outlook of $108B plus or minus 2% (NVIDIA Q2 release). Its earnings-call materials also describe substantial share repurchases and continued demand for AI infrastructure (NVIDIA earnings-call transcript).
  • The margin is small relative to recent volatility. NVIDIA’s shares have been more volatile than Apple’s, and their recent returns showed weakly negative correlation. That leaves NVIDIA’s lead less protected than a simple “big tech moves together” view would imply.
  • Apple has strong operating results of its own: its June 2026 quarter reported $109.4B in revenue and diluted EPS of $2.02 (Apple earnings release). Its November 2 earnings report precedes NVIDIA’s scheduled November 17 results, giving Apple an earlier catalyst (Apple earnings calendar).

Uncertainties

Market-cap rankings depend on one closing print, so a small late-year move can decide the outcome. NVIDIA remains exposed to an earnings or valuation reset if margins, China exposure, supply, customer financing, power availability, or AI-capex expectations disappoint; its own filing identifies supply and customer deployment constraints among the risks (NVIDIA filing). Conversely, another strong NVIDIA report could widen a lead that is already supported by unusually strong demand. Alphabet and Microsoft start well behind, but an NVIDIA-specific selloff combined with favorable AI news for either remains a low-probability path to No.

TL;DR

NVIDIA has a 56.7% probability of being the largest company in the world by market capitalization at the December 31, 2026 market close. The probability of No is 43.3%. NVIDIA is the current leader and has the strongest operating momentum, but its roughly 5% lead over Apple is small enough that one normal period of relative equity-market movement can reverse the order.

Context

This resolves on the single market close on December 31, 2026. It is therefore a ranking at one endpoint, not a judgment about which company leads for most of the remaining period. December 31 is a regular U.S. equity trading session (trading calendar).

NVIDIA enters the period ahead. The October 20 snapshot placed NVIDIA near $5.238T and Apple near $4.967T, followed by Alphabet near $4.170T and Microsoft near $3.951T. NVIDIA’s lead over Apple was about $270.7B, or 5.4502%; the deficits for Alphabet and Microsoft were 25.60% and 32.58%. The practical question is NVIDIA versus Apple, with the other two as tail challengers (market-cap ranking).

Evidence

The historical backbone is short, but it gives the right frame. In the comparable October 20 to December 31 interval in 2025, NVIDIA began first at $4.4467T against Apple at $3.8917T, a 14.25% advantage. It ended December 31 still first, at $4.5407T against Apple at $4.0345T. In 2024, Apple began October at $3.573T against NVIDIA at $3.385T and also kept its lead through December 31, ending at $3.785T against NVIDIA at $3.288T. Leadership persisted in both cases. But the 2026 starting margin is much thinner than NVIDIA’s 2025 margin, and two observations do not establish a stable base rate.

Recent relative performance is also mixed rather than one-sided:

Window NVIDIA total return Apple total return NVIDIA relative result
Oct. 20–Dec. 31, 2025 +2.12% +3.77% –1.65 percentage points
Jan. 2–Mar. 31, 2026 –7.65% –6.27% –1.38 pp
Apr. 1–Jun. 30, 2026 +13.98% +13.30% +0.68 pp
Jul. 1–Sep. 30, 2026 +15.72% +13.22% +2.50 pp

Apple outperformed in two of the four windows, while NVIDIA outperformed in the latest two. The moves were generally smaller than the current 5.45% capitalization gap. Yet NVIDIA experienced several short-window drawdowns of roughly 10–18%. That is enough to show why a narrow leadership edge should not be treated as durable.

The longer backdrop explains why NVIDIA starts ahead. From January 2023 to October 2026, NVIDIA’s adjusted-close return was roughly +1,420%, compared with about +177% for Apple, +279% for Alphabet, and +129% for Microsoft. This was an AI-led rerating, not a sensible short-run extrapolation. NVIDIA’s annualized volatility over that longer period was 47.8%, versus Apple’s 25.7%. The same growth story that created the lead also leaves the stock more exposed to changes in expectations.

A direct comparison with Apple favors NVIDIA only moderately. Apple needs approximately 5.17% relative log outperformance to overcome NVIDIA’s starting advantage, before small changes in shares outstanding. Over the remaining 51 sessions, the estimated NVIDIA–Apple relative standard deviation was about 19.6%. Recent NVIDIA and Apple daily returns were weakly negatively correlated, at –0.216. This matters because it increases the variability of the gap: NVIDIA’s position is less insulated than it would be if both stocks reliably moved together. The data therefore supports a modest favorite, not a high-confidence favorite.

NVIDIA’s fundamentals support that favorite status. Its fiscal Q2 2027 release reported $96.221B of revenue, up 106% year over year, $89.0B of Data Center revenue, up 117% year over year, and GAAP net income of $59.688B. The company guided fiscal Q3 revenue to $108B plus or minus 2%, without assuming Data Center compute revenue from China (NVIDIA Q2 release). Its earnings-call materials point to large share repurchases and ongoing demand strength (NVIDIA earnings-call transcript).

The supply chain provides a separate, useful confirmation. NVIDIA’s July-quarter filing says it was shipping Blackwell and Rubin systems and increased future supply-and-capacity commitments from $119B to $279B as of July 26, 2026 (NVIDIA filing). TSMC’s October results and outlook were also exceptionally strong, consistent with continued demand for leading-edge AI silicon (TSMC earnings release). These facts support the demand case. They do not ensure that NVIDIA shares rise, since much of that demand may already be reflected in its valuation.

Apple remains the central threat. It reported $109.4B in June-quarter revenue, up 16% year over year, and diluted EPS of $2.02, up 29% (Apple earnings release). Apple also has a faster recent share-count reduction, which helps its market capitalization relative to NVIDIA at the margin. Its November 2 report comes before NVIDIA’s scheduled November 17 fiscal Q3 release (Apple earnings calendar). A strong Apple result or holiday-quarter outlook could erase the gap before NVIDIA reports.

Alphabet and Microsoft are farther back, which is why they are not co-favorites. Their gaps require unusually large relative moves over a short period. Still, neither is irrelevant. A sharp NVIDIA-specific disappointment paired with a positive AI-monetization or cloud-computing surprise could let one of them pass. The current ranking establishes their distance, not impossibility (market-cap ranking).

What's non-obvious

The obvious read is that NVIDIA’s exceptional revenue growth makes it safely first. The less obvious fact is that the resolution does not ask whether NVIDIA has the best business momentum. It asks who has the highest equity value on a single close. Apple needs only a modest relative move, far less than the modeled dispersion of the NVIDIA–Apple gap over the remaining sessions.

The second non-obvious point is that favorable AI demand signals are double-edged. NVIDIA’s $279B supply-and-capacity commitments are evidence of demand confidence, but they also raise the cost of a demand, deployment, power, or financing shortfall (NVIDIA filing). Tight memory supply can support revenue visibility while pressuring margins. Reports of higher AI-server pricing show that tension directly (memory-cost report).

Uncertainties

The biggest uncertainty is the path of relative valuation rather than reported revenue. NVIDIA can produce very strong results and still fall if investors expected more from margins, next-year demand visibility, or returns on AI investment. Reporting around its August results captured this risk: results impressed, but the shares fell (coverage of NVIDIA results).

Several concrete gaps remain. The available starting market-cap readings include intraday observations, whereas resolution depends on a future official close. Short samples make correlation and volatility estimates unstable. The record does not provide a reliable current options-implied distribution, so it cannot directly measure how the market prices event tails.

NVIDIA’s own disclosures identify additional discontinuities: China restrictions, supply constraints, customer financing, and shortages of land, power, shells, or capital for data-center deployment (NVIDIA filing). Any one could trigger a repricing. On the other side, the inputs do not establish whether Apple’s product cycle will deliver a large upside surprise. Those unresolved catalysts are why NVIDIA remains the most likely leader, while No remains a substantial 43.3% outcome.
