Will Marine Le Pen win the 2027 French presidential election?
As of 6 October 2026, Prolepsia puts the chance of yes at 66%.
66%chance of yes
How Prolepsia reasons
The report Prolepsia wrote with this forecast.
TL;DR
The forecast is 65.9% Yes and 34.1% No for Marine Le Pen personally winning the next French presidential election. Her improved legal position and broad polling advantage make her the favorite, but a competitive runoff against Édouard Philippe and late opposition mobilization leave substantial room for defeat.
Key evidence
- The main legal barrier has weakened. The July 7, 2026 appeal judgment imposed 45 months of electoral disqualification, including 30 suspended, and credited the effective 15-month ban as already served. It maintained her conviction, but did not leave an election-spanning electoral prohibition in place (court communiqué). The prosecution subsequently declined to seek cassation, reducing one route to challenging the shortened sanction (July 15 reporting).
- Her first-round position is strong. Ifop’s September 25–29 survey of 1,393 registered voters gives her 31–36% of expressed preferences across candidate configurations. That supports a strong route to the runoff, not an outright first-round majority (Ifop report).
- Runoff strength depends on the opponent. Across five polling houses fielded from August 24 through September 24, the evidence places her clearly ahead of Mélenchon and more narrowly ahead of Philippe. The latest Harris survey reports 57% against Philippe and 69% against Mélenchon (Harris report).
- The Bardella controversy has not established a voting-intention collapse. YouGov found 47% opposing his resignation and 38% supporting it. Those are attitudes toward his position, not evidence of vote switching (survey notice).
Uncertainties
The strongest electoral risk is renewed anti-RN coordination once voters face an actual runoff. In Toulon’s municipal election, the RN candidate led the first round but lost the second—a useful warning, not a national prediction (official results).
The opposing candidate field remains unsettled. Centrist consolidation strengthens Philippe’s path to qualification; fragmentation creates a more favorable path for Mélenchon. Cassation proceedings, sentence execution and possible withdrawal also leave Le Pen’s personal participation short of certain. The most valuable new evidence would be a binding legal clarification, a settled candidate lineup and sustained runoff polling after the latest controversy.

TL;DR
The forecast is 65.9% Yes and 34.1% No for Marine Le Pen personally winning the next French presidential election. Her already-served electoral ban and leads across several polling houses make her the favorite. The decisive risk is that a real runoff, especially against Édouard Philippe, mobilizes voters who currently express no candidate preference.
Context
As of October 6, 2026, the announced election dates are April 18, 2027 for the first round and May 2, 2027 for the runoff (official election calendar). France’s two-round system makes first-round leadership different from victory: without an outright majority, Le Pen must finish among the top two and then defeat the other finalist. The question concerns the next election even if it occurs earlier.
This is a candidate-specific forecast. An RN victory with Jordan Bardella would not count as a Le Pen victory. The result must also be known by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET; otherwise, the market resolves to “Other.” The central issues are therefore her personal participation, the opposing finalist and the durability of her current runoff support.
Evidence
The historical backbone is cautionary but small. Le Pen received 33.90% in the May 7, 2017 presidential runoff and 41.45% in the April 24, 2022 runoff. Both were defeats, but the later result was much stronger (official election archives). Two elections do not establish a stable defeat rate. They also do not justify extending the increase in her vote share as a straight line. The useful lesson is narrower: campaign scrutiny and opposition mobilization have mattered in actual presidential runoffs.
Early polling before the previous election gives another reason for caution. The historical observations examined include 44% against Macron in Ifop’s August 31–September 2, 2021 survey (Ifop report); 42% in its September 29–October 1 survey (October notice); 47% in Harris’s October 1–4 survey (Harris report); and 44% in Ifop’s October 14–15 survey (Ifop presentation). These observations show meaningful variation between institutes and dates. They are not a fitted polling-bias estimate.
The narrower historical comparison in the analysis found an average 1.55-percentage-point overstatement across three original reports fielded September 29–October 6, 2021. That is evidence from one election, not a permanent correction. The forecast allows a two-point general downward adjustment to current runoff support and broad campaign uncertainty. Neither is a claim that the polls are wrong by a known amount.
The largest favorable change is legal. The Paris Court of Appeal’s July 7, 2026 judgment imposed 45 months of electoral disqualification, including 30 suspended. It credited the electoral ban executed since March 31, 2025, leaving the effective 15-month portion already served. The conviction remained, along with a prison sentence comprising two suspended years and one year under electronic monitoring (court communiqué). The conviction survived; the straightforward election-spanning ban did not.
The prosecution’s July 15 decision not to seek cassation further reduced the danger of a direct challenge to the shortened sanction (contemporaneous report). Le Pen’s own cassation proceedings still matter. The court contemplated a decision by early April 2027, subject to procedural developments, while cassation suspends execution of the electronic-monitoring sentence (court communication). The analysis retains a 92% assessment of personal participation, allowing for residual legal problems, withdrawal and substitution. That is an analytical judgment, not a legal finding.
First-round polling supports a strong qualification position. Ipsos’s September 3–9 survey of 13,060 registered voters places Le Pen at 33–35% across configurations (Ipsos report). Ifop’s September 25–29 fieldwork, published October 2, gives her 31–36% among 1,393 registered voters (Ifop report). Those figures support reaching the runoff, not winning outright.
The polling history examined for the two central runoff matchups is below. Figures are Le Pen’s weighted shares of expressed candidate preferences, not win probabilities.
| Polling house | Fieldwork in 2026 | Against Philippe | Against Mélenchon | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cluster17 | July 22–24 | 51.8% | 60.8% | Original notice |
| Ifop | August 24–25 | 52% | 67% | Original notice |
| Elabe | August 26–28 | 52.5% | 69.5% | Original notice |
| OpinionWay | September 9–10 | 55% | 67% | Polling record |
| YouGov | September 17–21 | 55% | 64% | Original notice |
| Harris | September 22–24 | 57% | 69% | Original report |
The five-house evidence from August 24 through September 24 gives recency-weighted expressed shares of 54.62% against Philippe and 67.19% against Mélenchon. The conclusion is robust across houses: Philippe is the harder opponent. But this is not a clean longitudinal series following the same voters. Differences in methods and turnout filters mean the apparent rise against Philippe cannot be read entirely as electoral momentum.
Opponent selection remains unsettled. In Ifop’s latest survey, Philippe receives 16% with Attal also standing and 21% without him; Mélenchon receives 15% and 16%, respectively (Ifop report). Cluster17 found Philippe and Mélenchon roughly tied even without Attal (Cluster17 report). I read this as a genuine coordination problem, not a settled Philippe nomination followed by automatic qualification.
Local elections supply mixed evidence. In Toulon, RN candidate Laure Lavalette led 42.05% to 29.54% in the March 15 first round, then lost 47.65% to 52.35% on March 22. The ministry labels those results provisional (official results). This shows that opposition coordination can overcome a large RN first-round lead. It does not establish that a presidential electorate will behave the same way.
The party’s organization has also expanded. CEVIPOF’s municipal study identifies 548 RN or allied lists, approximately 60 winning communes and more than 3,100 councillors, with more than nine in ten victories concentrated in four regions (CEVIPOF study). September Senate victories in Gironde and Seine-Maritime add evidence of institutional reach, but these were indirect elections among local representatives, not national opinion polls (Gironde results; Seine-Maritime results).
What's non-obvious
The central runoff mechanism is not necessarily mass conversion to the RN. It is uneven willingness to support the alternative. Harris finds that, in a Le Pen–Philippe matchup, 55% of Mélenchon’s first-round supporters express abstention, blank or null voting, while 36% choose Philippe and 9% Le Pen. Against Mélenchon, 59% of Philippe supporters express no candidate preference (transfer tables). These hypothetical responses explain both Le Pen’s advantage and its vulnerability: currently disengaged opponents are a potential mobilization reservoir.
The Bardella controversy also requires a distinction between condemnation and electoral damage. The allegations concern antisemitic messages attributed to him; he denies them (reporting on the dispute). YouGov’s September 29–October 1 survey of 1,007 adults found 47% opposing his resignation and 38% supporting it (survey notice). That does not measure vote switching. The analysis therefore treats reputational spillover as a real uncertainty while allowing only a modest immediate discount, rather than assuming an unmeasured collapse.
Uncertainties
The largest gap is durable post-controversy runoff evidence. Most of the central runoff polling predates the latest allegations and supporting material. Sustained surveys measuring candidate preference, turnout intention and opposition transfers would clarify whether the controversy changes the election rather than merely attitudes toward Bardella.
Legal finality is also unresolved. The precise consequences of annulment, candidate certification and the timing of electronic monitoring remain relevant (specialist legal analysis). A binding ruling would reduce this uncertainty. Continued campaigning alone does not settle eligibility or eliminate withdrawal risk.
Finally, hypothetical matchups do not capture the selection effect of a successful challenger. A Philippe who actually reaches the runoff may have built a stronger coalition than the Philippe tested today. Subgroup transfer estimates also lack verified denominators in the analysis. These limits explain why the forecast remains 65.9% Yes and 34.1% No despite strong current polling, rather than treating Le Pen’s lead as an assured victory.

The question
Imported from Polymarket. This yes/no question comes from a single Polymarket market.
How it resolves
The next French presidential election is currently expected to be held around April 2027. This market pertains to the outcome of the next French presidential election, regardless of whether it follows the scheduled end of the current term or is held earlier. The President of France is elected via a two-round system; a candidate must secure over 50% of the vote to win outright in the first round. If no candidate achieves this, the top two contenders advance to a runoff. This market will resolve according to the candidate who wins this election. This market includes any potential second round. If, for any reason, the results of the election are not known by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "Other". This market will resolve based on the result of the election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as reported by the French Government, specifically the Ministry of the Interior (https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/).
